A Europass CV template is the fastest way to put the standard European layout in front of a recruiter without designing anything yourself. The catch is that the word "template" means three different things depending on who asked you for the CV, and picking the wrong one is what gets applications rejected.

This guide sorts that out first, then hands you the complete Europass section skeleton to paste into whatever editor you already use, and shows how to fill in the two sections that most downloaded files get wrong. The European Commission provides Europass free of any charge and in 31 languages, so none of this should cost you anything.

Which Europass CV Template You Actually Need

Before downloading anything, read the job ad once more. "Europass" in an application means one of two things, and they need different files.

If the employer just wants a clear, European-style CV, any faithful template works: the person reading it sees a document, not a file format. If the call for applications names Europass as a formal requirement, they expect the file the official Europass editor generates from your online profile, and a lookalike will not pass.

Does a downloaded template work for this application?
  • A company asks for your CV by email — template is fineNobody checks where the layout came from
  • The ad asks for the CV as an editable .docx — template is fineA downloaded template is the only route that gives you an editable file
  • A public administration or an EU institution asks for a Europass CV — official editor onlyThey expect the PDF the editor generates from your profile
  • An Erasmus+, grant or scholarship application — official editor onlyThe call almost always names Europass as a formal requirement
  • You need the same CV in another European language — official editor onlyThe editor covers 31 languages; a downloaded file stays in the one you typed

Everything below applies to both routes. The Europass format is the running order of the sections, not the file it arrives in.

And if re-reading the ad left you unsure whether you need the format at all, our comparison of the Europass CV against a normal CV settles that before you download anything.

Where to Download a Fillable Europass CV Template

There is no official blank template to download. Since the 2020 relaunch, Europass builds the document from your profile, so every "official Europass template" offered as a .docx is a third-party recreation of the same sections.

That is not a problem on its own — a careful recreation is indistinguishable from the real thing once it is printed. It does mean you should open the file before spending an hour on it: single column, real headings, nothing important trapped in a text box or in the document header. Our guide to free Europass CV templates in Word compares where those files actually come from, and the Europass CV in Word walkthrough shows how to build the structure yourself if none of them convince you.

If you would rather not download anything at all, take the skeleton in the next section and paste it into Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice. That is the whole template.

The Europass CV Template, Section by Section

This is the full Europass running order. Keep the sections and keep the order, and what you send is a Europass CV whatever you typed it in.

SectionWhat goes in itLeave it out when
Personal informationName, phone, email, city and country. Nationality and date of birth only where the destination country expects them.Never — but only your name is genuinely mandatory
About meThree or four lines: your role, your years in it, and what you are looking for now.You are sending an academic CV where the cover letter carries this
Work experienceOne entry per job, most recent first, with dates as month/year.You have none — move education above it instead
Education and trainingQualification, awarding institution, city and dates. Same order and date format as the experience.Never
Language skillsMother tongue first, then each other language self-assessed across five separate skills.Never — this is the section Europass is known for
Digital skillsTools grouped by what you use them for, not an alphabetical dump.Your field makes them irrelevant and the space is better spent
Other skillsAnything that supports the role and is not digital or linguistic. You would be padding to fill the page
Additional informationDriving licence, volunteering, publications, courses, references.None of it is relevant to this specific application

Two rules travel with the skeleton. Dates always run most recent first, and they always use month and year, in the experience and in the education alike. Mixing formats between the two sections is the single most common way a good template stops looking European.

How to Fill In the Two Sections People Get Wrong

Work experience and languages are where a downloaded file quietly stops being Europass. Every work entry repeats the same four pieces, in the same order, for every job on the page.

One work experience entry, Europass style

The four pieces, in the order Europass expects them:

03/2021 - 07/20241 Logistics Coordinator2 Nortransa Group, Valencia (Spain)3 Planned 40 weekly routes and cut empty return trips by 18%.4

  1. 1Month and year, always. A bare year reads like a gap you are hiding.
  2. 2Job title before employer: it is the line a recruiter scans for.
  3. 3Employer, city and country. The country matters in a cross-border CV.
  4. 4Two or three lines of what you did, with a number wherever you have one.

Languages are the other one. Europass expects a self-assessment of five separate skills — listening, reading, spoken interaction, spoken production and writing — each with its own level from A1 to C2, and the official self-assessment guide explains how to choose each level honestly.

A template that only gives you one line per language is not following the format. If yours does that, replace the line with a small five-column table before you fill anything else in; retrofitting it later means rebuilding the section.

Both sections are easier to get right when you can copy the level of detail from a finished CV. Our five filled-in Europass CV examples show complete work entries and per-skill language levels for five different profiles.

Before You Send It: File Format and Common Rejections

Send a PDF unless the ad explicitly asks for something else, and name the file with your own name rather than cv_final_v3. A PDF preserves the layout you spent the afternoon on; a .docx will reflow on the reader's machine.

The one message worth recognising in advance is "the file is not compatible with Europass", which appears when a portal expects a file the editor produced and receives a template-based one instead. Our fix for the Europass file not compatible error explains what to send instead, and it is almost never a matter of trying another template.

One last thing the template cannot do for you: adapt the content. The Europass layout stays identical from one application to the next, so if you are applying to several jobs a week, the rewriting is the part that eats your evenings. Our AI resume builder keeps the same European section logic, fills it once from your existing CV, and rewrites the profile and the bullets for each job ad in a couple of minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an official Europass CV template in Word?

No. The European Commission stopped publishing downloadable .doc templates when Europass moved online in 2020. Every Word template you find today is a third-party recreation of the same sections, which is fine for most applications but is not an official Europass file.

Can I fill in a Europass template without creating an account?

Yes, if you use a downloaded template: you type into it offline and nobody registers anything. The official editor is the route that needs a Europass profile, because it builds the document from the data stored in that profile.

Do I have to include a photo in a Europass CV?

Only where the destination country expects one. Photos are normal in Spain, Germany and much of southern Europe, and are actively discouraged in Ireland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. When in doubt, leave it out — no employer rejects a CV for missing a photo.

How long should a Europass CV be?

Two pages is the sensible ceiling for almost everyone, and one is enough below five years of experience. The Europass structure inflates on its own, so cut repeated skills and old jobs before you start shrinking the font.

Can I reuse the same template in another language?

You can, but you have to translate it yourself. Europass translates the section headings across its 31 languages, never your content, and a downloaded template does not even do that much.
