A Harvard resume template is a one-column, black-and-white resume with a centered header, short section headings and every entry in reverse chronological order. No photo, no colors, no graphics: the design steps aside so the content does the work.
This guide gives you the Harvard resume format section by section, a complete example you can copy, the rules Harvard's own career office sets, and how it compares with Europass. At the end you'll find how to build yours free in an online editor, with no Word file to fight.
What Is the Harvard Resume Format?
The Harvard format is the resume style taught by Harvard's career services office (now the Mignone Center for Career Success). It is not a single official file: Harvard publishes a bullet-point version and a paragraph resume template in Word, and both follow the same logic.
That logic is simple: content over design. Recruiters scan the page top to bottom, so the layout has to be predictable, and the strongest information has to sit where the eye lands first.
- One column, no sidebars, no text boxes.
- Centered header with your name and contact details on one or two lines.
- Short headings (Education, Experience, Skills) ordered by importance.
- Reverse chronological order inside each section: most recent first.
It is not only for Harvard alumni or academic jobs. The format works in finance, consulting, tech, law or any role where a clean, scannable document counts more than visual flair.
Harvard Resume Template: Structure Section by Section
These are the blocks of a Harvard CV template, in the order a student or early-career candidate should use. With several years of work behind you, move Experience above Education.
| Section | What goes in it | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Header | Name, target title, city, email, phone, LinkedIn | Centered, with a thin line underneath. No photo, age or marital status |
| Profile (optional) | Two or three lines on who you are and what you bring | Skip the title "Profile": the paragraph itself is enough |
| Education | University, degree, dates, honors, relevant coursework or thesis | Goes first if you graduated in the last two or three years |
| Experience | Organization, city, role, dates and 2-4 bullets per role | Each bullet starts with an action verb and ends with a result |
| Leadership & Activities | Volunteering, student clubs, projects, competitions | Same format as Experience: role, dates, bullets |
| Skills & Interests | Tools, languages with level, certifications, two or three interests | A comma-separated line per category, not a cloud of badges |
Harvard's guidance gives no fixed font size or margins. The usual convention is a classic font at 10-12 pt and margins of about 0.5-1 inch, and one page unless you have over ten years of relevant experience.
Complete Harvard Resume Example
Here is a finished Harvard resume example for a recent business graduate applying for a junior data analyst role. Copy the structure, not the content.
LUCÍA ROMERO GIL
Junior Data Analyst
Valencia, Spain · lucia.romero@email.com · +34 600 000 000 · linkedin.com/in/luciaromero
Business graduate with an internship in sales analytics. I automate reports in Excel and Power BI and turn sales data into product range decisions.
EDUCATION
University of Valencia — B.A. in Business Administration, 2020-2024. Thesis: demand forecasting for regional retail. GPA 8.1/10.
EXPERIENCE
Food retail chain, Valencia — Sales Analyst Intern, Feb-Jul 2024
- Analyzed weekly sales for 40 stores in Excel and Power BI, cutting the monthly report from three days to one.
- Flagged 12 slow-moving products and proposed delisting them; the buying team approved the change.
Sporting goods store, Valencia — Part-Time Sales Associate, 2021-2023
- Served an average of 60 customers per shift and handled end-of-day cash reconciliation.
LEADERSHIP & ACTIVITIES
University food bank — Volunteer Coordinator, 2022-2024. Coordinated 15 volunteers across two collection drives.
SKILLS & INTERESTS
Tools: Advanced Excel, Power BI, basic SQL. Languages: Spanish (native), English (C1). Interests: running, chess.
Notice what is missing: no photo, no "References available upon request", no skill bars. Every line either proves something or tells the reader how to contact you.
Each line of experience follows the same four-part pattern:
Analyzed1 weekly sales for 40 stores2 in Excel and Power BI3, cutting the monthly report from three days to one4
- 1Action verb in the past tense, never “I” or “responsible for”.
- 2What you did, with its scope.
- 3The tools: they double as keywords for ATS filters.
- 4The measurable result: the part recruiters actually read.
Harvard Format Rules: What to Include and What to Avoid
Harvard's career office sums up its advice in a short list of do's and don'ts on how to create a strong resume. These are the ones that define the format:
Do
- List entries in reverse chronological order
- Order headings by importance
- Keep bold, italics and dates consistent
- Quantify results wherever you can
- Include your email and phone number
Don't
- Include a photo, age or gender
- List references
- Use personal pronouns (I, we)
- Start each line with a date
- Use slang or abbreviations
Harvard also asks you to tailor the resume to each type of position and to check that the formatting survives conversion to PDF. Both matter for automated screening: a single-column layout with standard headings is what passing ATS filters requires, and a PDF with selectable text is what those systems parse.
How Is a Harvard Resume Different From Europass?
Both are sober and text-first, but they come from different traditions. Europass is the European Union's standard CV, which you can create in 31 languages; its official CV builder even recommends adding a professional photo. Harvard tells you to leave the photo out.
| Harvard | Europass | |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | US university career guidance | EU standard format |
| Photo | No | Recommended, professional |
| Typical length | One page (convention) | Longer: more fixed sections to fill |
| Design | Black and white, one column | Fixed Europass layout |
| Best for | Private sector, US and UK roles, international firms | EU public calls, Erasmus, jobs that ask for it |
If an offer or a public call explicitly asks for Europass, use a Europass CV template. For everything else, the Harvard format is usually shorter, faster to read and easier to tailor.
How to Build Your Harvard Resume Free, Step by Step
You don't need a Word template and an afternoon fixing margins. The Harvard template is one of the free designs in the Interactive CV resume builder, and the layout above is already built in.
- Create your CV with a free account: upload your current resume or start from scratch.
- Choose the Harvard template in the Templates tab. The header centers itself and the profile appears first, without a title, as the format requires.
- Fill in each section in reverse chronological order. If you have no work history yet, see what to put on a CV with no experience.
- Leave the photo field empty unless the job ad asks for one.
- Download the PDF and check it fits on one page.
The short version: one column, newest first, action verbs with results, no photo. Open the editor, pick Harvard and fill it in once: tailoring it to the next offer then takes minutes, not a new document.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Harvard resume include a photo?
No. Harvard's career office lists "include a picture" among the things to avoid, together with age and gender. Add one only if the job ad explicitly requests it.
How long should a Harvard resume be?
Harvard sets no page limit, but the convention is one page for students and early-career candidates. Go to two pages only with long, relevant experience.
Is the Harvard resume format ATS-friendly?
Yes. A single column, standard headings and plain text are exactly what applicant tracking systems read best. Export it as a PDF with selectable text, not as an image.
Can I use the Harvard format if I didn't study at Harvard?
Yes. It is a style, not a credential, and it works for any industry. What makes it "Harvard" is the structure and the rules, not the university on the page.
Can I download a Harvard resume template in Word?
Harvard publishes its own Word templates on its career services site. If you'd rather skip formatting, an online editor with a Harvard template lets you fill it in and download a PDF directly.
